Behold, The Power of Black

Never underestimate the power of paint, and specifically, the power of black to transform a space.

I was asked to help a church update their building on a shoestring budget.  The 80's hunter green trim did nothing to help the taupe on the exterior.  Because it was less expensive to repaint the trim instead of the entire building, we started there and I decided on black.

A coat of black paint later...and voila!

The exterior instantly looks updated, classy & pulled together.  The taupe even looks better!

Most of the time, you don't need a drastic, expensive change to make a dramatic difference.

Let's Go To Luckenbach, Texas

In some ways, I guess you could say there's not much to Luckenbach.  It's barely a spot on the map, just outside *Fredericksburg, Texas.  But for Texans, being there is a spiritual experience. And for me, inspiration for my soul is everywhere.

*Fredericksburg is a quaint little Texas town bustling with boutique shops, gourmet and down-home restaurants and deep-rooted German culture.

The Antique Rose Emporium

The Antique Rose Emporium in Brenham, Texas, is a favorite place of mine.  You can order from them online or through their catalog, but if you ever get the chance to go in person, do it.

They are a full-service nursery, specializing in heirloom garden roses but also offer other varieties of plants.

The grounds of the Emporium are breathtaking and quintessentially Texas.

They have picnic tables & cafe tables scattered where you're allowed to bring a picnic, sit and read or whatever your heart desires.  Heavenly.

It's definitely worth the drive.
If you happen to be at Round Top for antiques week, it's a lovely little side trip.

Sister Camp

Sister Camp is the beautiful brain-child of my friend, D'Wana Villines at Mountain Girl Melodies. D'Wana has a passion to facilitate connection, refreshment & creativity of generations of women from all walks of life.  It's my joy to partner with her to help tell her unfolding story...and maybe yours, too...

D'Wana & I at Sister Camp 2015

Sister Camp is about getting away from the hustle and retreating to a peaceful, all-inclusive mountain setting with girlfriends for a few days.  It's deep breaths.  It's heartfelt hugs.  It's pampering.  It's homemade, gourmet, organic food.  It's candlelight.  It's an acoustic lullaby.  It's unhurried conversation.  It's a scrumptious breakfast on the back deck.   It's an easy, refreshing hike in a national forest.  It's a picnic lunch on the river bank.  It's singing & roasting s'mores by a campfire.  It's cozy quilts.  It's a chance to make art in D'Wana's fun little cabin studio.  It's encouraging, soul-stirring sessions led by creatives and life coaches.  It's what you always wanted summer camp to be.  It's the space and time for a nap or two.  It's the best kind of surprises.  It's a place for healers to be healed, nurturers to be nurtured. It's about filling up your vessel so you can pour out fresh love & creativity over the heads of those you influence.  Sister Camp is all this and more.

The next Sister Camp is April 28-May 1, 2016 and we'd love for you to join us.   Register here.

Back To School

And yet begins another school year.  This will be our 19th consecutive year of homeschooling. Some years, I have loved it; other years, I have wanted to resign from my teaching position.  There have been years that we also had a child in private and public school, but we've homeschooled at least one child every year since 1995.

No matter how you choose to educate your children, here's to another year full of promise.  Here's to another year of your child's growth into a beautiful young adult.  Here's to getting another year closer to the next chapter of your life that will not include the daily overseeing of children.  (This is both sad and exciting, if you're like me.)

Lean into it.  You're gonna miss this.

On Being Sentimental

Ask the people who know me best and they would say one word that sums up my decorating style is "sentimental."  For me, this is true because I've always been on a tight decorating budget and have had to use what I have.  And what I've had on hand were things I've squirreled away since childhood and along the way that meant something to me.  I was blessed to have a fairly Mayberry upbringing with family and friends I actually want to be reminded of, for the most part.  ;)

For many, their childhoods are something they want to forget.  They didn't grow up baking with Mom or fishing with Dad or playing board games with their grandparents.  I get that.

Decorating with sentimentality doesn't have to mean reliving a your childhood.  It just means that you choose your furnishings and accents with intention to remind yourself of something good and comforting that tells your story, even if it happened last week.  You get to choose which stories you tell and what you want to be reminded of.

Being sentimental does not mean constantly longing for the good ol' days.  It means not just choosing something because it's pretty, trendy, expensive or cheap, but intentionally choosing items, vintage and new, that are symbols or reminders of who you are, who your family is, even who God is to you or what He has done in your life.

When people walk into a home that is authentic, they relax.  These are the comfy homes.  These are not always the magazine spread homes...not always the most spotless homes.  However, these spaces resonate with those they welcome.

And by the way, just because something worked for you five years ago does not mean it's telling your story today.  We grow and change.  Our homes will, as well.  If anything in your home is not useful or bringing you joy, it's probably time to put it away, give it away to someone who needs it or would cherish it or sell it.  This is not a one-time thing, but rather it's an on-going process.

Podcasts

One of the little pleasures of life is the invention of podcasts (via iTunes).  I love that I can multi-task by putting in my earbuds and listening to great content all day long while I am doing something productive with my hands, on the treadmill, for the long drives to town and back or on road trips.

The sky is the limit as far as topics and types of podcasts out there.  I'm pretty picky with what goes into my brain.  I like to keep it educational, informative, smartly funny or inspiring.  Here are some of my current favorites that fit the bill:

Stuff You Missed In History Class
A Prairie Home Companion
TEDTalks Audio
TEDTalks Radio Hour
BBC World Service Global News
Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me (NPR)
That Sounds Fun (Annie F. Downs)
Hopeologie (Myquillin Smith & Emily P. Freeman)
The Big Boo Cast (Sophie Hudson & Melanie Shankle)
Grace Talks (Edie Wadsworth)
The Slow Home Podcast (Brooke McAlary)
The Splendid Table
Bethel (Bethel Redding)

What about you?  Do you listen to podcasts?  Which are your faves?
